DJ Coline – [Laura Lies In] Mixtape
The Belgian illustrator and DJ Coline Cornélis describes this ambient mixtape as a tour of two divergent mind states: chaos in the first half and “the harmony that emerges from it” in the second. (Sales of the physical cassette benefit Mind, a UK mental-health nonprofit.)
The A-side is a storm-tossed craft navigating murky drones, melancholy Aboriginal songs, pipe organ, post-punk, and Ghédalia Tazartés’ terrifying “Un Amour Si Grand Qu’il Nie Son Objet.” The B-side, though, couldn’t be more luminous: It traverses Malian kora, birdsong, harp, samba, Afro-Colombian marimba, and, to close, the gentlest house music. An unusual mix, and a thoughtful one, as unguarded as a letter written late at night.
